Adding to the long list of the ‘Voice of the Blue Eagle’s’ remarkable accolades was its inclusion in the winner’s circle of the prestigious Spirit of College Radio Awards.

Out of 570 participants across 43 countries, the pioneering Ateneo de Manila University campus radio emerged among the top ten college stations that went ‘above and beyond for World College Radio Day’ (WCRD), last October 2, 2020.

“I wasn’t expecting much about it since we just joined the celebration this year. Being able to enter and be recognized as a global participant was already a feat in itself, then this came so it was an amazing year for our first run,” fondly recalled Radyo Katipunan Station Coordinator Justin Pontino, of the award presented by college radio ambassador Bret Michaels, together with the College Radio Foundation.

Apart from an interesting program lineup during the actual WCRD event, which included an engaging discussion with TIME Magazine 2019 Person of the Year Maria Ressa, Radyo Katipunan also received favorable votes for ‘embodying the passion and mission of college radio’- a testament to its commitment to public service amidst challenging times.

“We operate on a culture of doing more for others, or Magis. The pandemic has brought about all kinds of challenges imaginable, yet because we have that culture in us, we continuously find ways to be of service to our community through our platform,” explained Pontino.

Driven by its five principal goals of communicating Information, Instruction, Insight, Inspiration and Identity, Pontino sees Radyo Katipunan’s values-enriched programs and ever-widening reach beyond Loyola Heights- while keeping its proudly Atenean identity- as key factors to its continued success.

“As a college radio station, I believe that we should strive to become a unifying voice to a diverse campus community like Ateneo. RK perfectly intertwines this through its programming that caters to all segments within and even beyond our campus.”

“We try to be as holistic and inclusive as possible while we embody ourselves with the values that an academic, Catholic, and Jesuit community should espouse,” he continued.

With the multi-stream platform now catering to over 35,000 followers on social media, Radyo Katipunan begins the new year, looking to soar to greater heights, while remaining grounded and grateful to the Ateneo community it humbly serves.

“We will continue on with what we have been doing and offering to our community, plus explore more ways to better serve them. We are hoping that our community will also continue to support and nurture us through their continued participation and patronage. We are forever grateful,” expressed Pontino.
