Uplifting meditations, loving hymns, and fervent devotions highlighted Jesuit Music Ministry’s (JMM) Marian-themed concert “Inay: Mga Awit at Panalangin kay Maria”, held last Saturday night, October 24.
Streamed live via the Jesuit Communications (JesCom) and Radyo Katipunan 87.9 FM Facebook pages, “Inay” was a moving tribute to the Blessed Mother.
Kneeling before the candle-lit altar of the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception, former university president, Fr. Jett Villarin SJ, led virtual audiences in praying the Joyful Mysteries- speaking of the deep reverence the Ateneo de Manila community holds for its beloved patroness.
“We remind ourselves of our love for Mary- a love that was inspired by our founder, St. Ignatius of Loyola. He was a man who surrendered everything- his sword, his pride, all that he was to Our Lady, there at Montserrat. With Our Blessed Mother as his witness, he stripped of his worldly self, and began to live a life centered on God.”
JesCom Executive Director, Fr. Nono Alfonso SJ, formally welcomed and invited the online gallery to follow Our Lady’s example in following Christ through both trials and triumphs, “with a heart full of grace, full of faith.”
“Mary is central to the life of Christ and therefore, central to the Church and our faith. With the Blessed Virgin as our witness, we share in these momentous accounts of Jesus’ life,” continued Fr. Nono in his opening remarks.
Raising the curtain for Bro. Dom Bulan SJ’s ‘Aba Ginoong Maria’, Himig Heswita’s ‘Ave Maria’, Fr. Arnel Aquino SJ’s ‘Oyayi’ with Sr. Bubbles Bandojo rc and Sr. Susay Valdez rc, was Manila Cathedral Vice Rector Fr. Kali Llamado’s sharing on the church’s Christmas traditions and welcoming presence during this time of pandemic.
“Sa gitna ng pandemya may sayang dulot ang makita ang Mahal na Ina, ang makita ang Diyos.
Ngayong papalapit na ang kapaskuhan, magpatulong tayo kay Maria upang huwag magapi ng mga pagsubok ang saya ng kapanganakan ni Hesus.”
Philippine Jesuit Prison Service Executive Director, Fr. Eli Lumbo SJ’s emotional retelling of the Bilibid inmates’ struggles and hope in the Blessed Mother’s intercession, set the stage for Musica Chiesa’s instrumental piece ‘Stella Maris’, Sch. Migs Ramirez’ rendition of ‘Mariang Ina Ko’ and the SJ Tañong Chorale’s ‘Hihalil ni Maria’.
Back-to-back soulful performances by Awit-award nominee Arman Ferrer with ‘Inay’ and Natt Dublin on ‘Bagong Bahaghari’, paved the way for Fatima Soriano’s inspiring testimony of encountering the Blessed Virgin’s presence through the Holy Rosary.
“I first came to deeply understand Mama Mary’s love when I had my kidney failure in 2003. With every word, habang nananalangin po kami, naramdaman ko in my heart, nandoon si Mama Mary at yung pagmamahal niya.”
In between Koro Ilustrado’s ‘Aba po, Santa Mariang Reyna’ and Tinig Barangka’s ‘Maria Bukang Liwayway’ were solo numbers from Jep Go and Fr.Ernald Andal SJ, on ‘Awit ng Pagsuyo’ and ‘Maria, Tala ng Karagatan’, respectively.
As Hangad Music Ministry sang ‘Inang Mahal’ in memory of Eric Bolante, while Fr. Junjun Borres SJ and Fr. Arnel Aquino later collaborated on ‘Mahal naming Ina’, JMM Director Lester Mendiola closed the evening with a prayer of gratitude to Our Lady.
“Thank you to our Inay, for your grace and infectious love. Without you, our lives will never be the same. As we see our own lives through the eyes of Mary, may we also see the love of Christ and the promise of His salvation.”
