Jesuit Communications to launch Ed Garcia’s COURAGE! May 22

Jesuit Communications Foundation, Inc.  (JesCom) is all set to launch “COURAGE!”, the latest book of esteemed professor and 1987 Constitutional framer Ed Garcia, this Tuesday, May 22, 4pm at the Areté, Ateneo de Manila University.

At this critical juncture in our nation’s history, where the rise of fake news, partisanship and radical political beliefs have deeply divided the Filipino, “COURAGE!” comes as a welcome reprieve and a comforting beacon of hope.

In the face of the destructive political atmosphere of hatred and violence, the peace worker, educator and activist challenges Filipinos to practice “moral courage in the face of risks and threats” and “to do the right thing in the right way in the face of one’s fears.”

From his original working title “The Courage to Hope”, Garcia finally settled on “COURAGE!” upon realizing that “if one had courage then there is hope; hope can inevitably follow. Courage is a verb, I believe, and the noun is the Filipino”.

Inspiring our countrymen to strive and hope for a better and brighter tomorrow, Garcia underscores the importance of this virtue “to keep that inner fire alive, and to engender in others the courage to hope, in good and bad times, in season and out of season.”

Recalling the brave martyrdom of Jesuit seminarian Richie Fernando, the teacher, proud grandfather and mentor of the young highlights the immense power of the Filipino youth to do “acts of courage and sacrifice”.

The author Prof. Ed Garcia

Galvanized by the Jesuit value of the Magis or “to be more and do more in everything that truly matters”, “COURAGE!”  emphasizes Garcia’s stirring conviction that indeed, “every young Filipino can aspire to be better, in great or small things…in this way, we can overcome the hate and the fear, and take our country in a different direction.”

Among the notable guests expected to grace the event are Notre Dame de Sion Philippines Superior Sr. Patricia Fox, Bishop of the Diocese of Kalookan  Rev. Pablo Virgilio “Ambo” S. David, D.D.,  University of the Philippines, Diliman Chancellor Dr. Michael L. Tan, renowned poet and former University of the Philippines Vice President  Dr. Gemino H. Abad will read his newly-minted work, “From Rage to Courage.”; Professor Benjamin  T. Tolosa, Jr. , Ph.D.  of the Ateneo de Manila University and Jesuit Music Ministry artist Mr. Toto Sorioso who will render Fr. Manoling Francisco’s “Your Heart Today” where he pens the line “…I pray for courage.”  A representative from the successor generation will also share, converting this launch into a platform of citizen courage.

    • Good afternoon, sir! Thank you for your feedback. The photo in the article is not a recent one. It did come directly from page 131 of Prof. Garcia’s book, Courage!

    • I am terribly mistaken. I did not recognize him in the photo at all nor did I see the name tag!

A wonderful and relevant book. “Amid the darkest night there is dawn.” How difficult it is to have moral courage amid adversity, against great challenge especially in a politics marked by a paucity of principles. Many of my generation have become disillusioned and feel powerless. Yet we must continue to hope to achieve a nation worthy of and for our children. In difficult times, I would take comfort in having a copy of this book in my shelf.

I particularly enjoyed reading the reminiscences on our late statesmen: Diokno, Tañada, and Magsaysay. These stories ought to be made popularly known.
