A Fiery Flame: Encountering God’s WordA Fiery Flame: Encountering God’s Word

By Catalino G. Arevalo, SJ; Teodoro C. Bacani, DD; Pablo V. David, DD; and Luis A. Tagle, DD

“Ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of Christ” are the words of Saint Jerome, the great biblical scholar and translator. These words remain a constant challenge for all Christians, especially preachers and teachers of the Word. To meet this challenge of knowing the Word of God, the San Jose Seminary organized a one-day Verbum Dei Forum on October 4, 2009, at which four major papers were presented.

This book is a collection of those four reflective essays on the Word of God given by top Filipino theologians and biblical scholars: Father Catalino Arévalo, SJ, Bishop Luis Antonio “Chito” Tagle, Bishop Pablo “Ambo” David, and Bishop Teodoro “Ted” Bacani. Each contributor focused his reflections on one aspect of the Final Message of the 2008 Synod of Bishops, which bore the title: “The Word of God in the Life and Mission of the Church.” Through this endeavor, the fruits of the Synod were made available to a Filipino audience. Now these reflections are available in printed form in the book A Fiery Flame: Encountering God’s Word, professionally edited by James Kroeger, MM and Joseph Zaldivar.

Jesus: A PortraitJesus: A Portrait

By Fr. Gerald O’Collins, SJ and Fr. James Kroeger

“This book is about personally knowing Jesus through the Gospel stories, stories that involve mystery, as the eyewitness portraits of Jesus reflects light on our lives and challenge our world. And we find that in seeing ourselves more clearly, we begin to see Jesus too.” – Robert Gallagher, Wheaton College Graduate School

“A Portrait of Jesus that is both accessible and the fruit of profound scholarship. O’Collins’ touch is sure. Jesus: A Portrait is a delight to read.” – Timothy Radcliffe, O.P., author of “What Is the Point of Being a Christian?”
